Chapter 13

Yeah, We’re Not on Twilon-6

Twelve Hours Earlier

Heidi tapped Claire on the shoulder to let her know she wanted her turn to dance with Wyatt. With a kiss to each of them, Claire handed Wyatt off to Heidi. Wyatt looked a little tired and probably needed a short rest or a slow dance, but Claire knew that as long as Wyatt breathed, he wouldn’t disappoint his three beautiful girlfriends. Walking to a bottle of champagne chilling in a tub of ice, Claire poured herself a glass. Then, leaning against the wall, she watched Wyatt and Heidi swirl around the room. At the end of the table, Julie chatted with Raelene.

Claire’s heart totally, absolutely, and deliciously in love roared, and she wanted to walk across the room, take her lovers by the hand, lead them to the bedroom and electrify them with what beat within her. But Claire knew, as she gazed longingly across the room, that she had to be patient. She had to first wait for the right moment for her and Herr Oberst and Claire anxiously wondered when that would be.

Michael appeared next to her. “Soon Claire, very soon.”

Claire contemplated Michael for a moment, wondering how to respond.

“Let’s go someplace and talk,” said Michael. He waved a finger.

When Michael and Claire reappeared, they were on a beautiful beach in Australia with lots of people on it. Claire wore a strapless flowing yellow sundress with a wide brimmed straw hat.

“I hope you don’t mind,” said Michael, as he watched Claire examine the dress, “but I’ve always thought you looked absolutely stunning in yellow. In that dress, you make the day look beautiful.”

Claire leaned over and kissed Michael on the cheek. “Thank you, Michael,” said Claire. “By the way, where is Rachel?”

Michael pointed to a balcony on the top floor of a nearby small hotel where Rachel waved at her. Claire waved back.

“She’s relaxing,” said Michael. “Pregnant women need their rest in order to have healthy bouncy little spawns of Oregon.”

“I was so happy for you two when I heard,” said Claire with a big smile.

She refocused. “So, what do we need to talk about?”

“A lot will be decided tomorrow in Paris after you meet up with Julie, Heidi, and Wyatt,” said Michael. “You need to take Gretchen with you and involve her in everything you four do from now on.”

“Gretchen? Why should I take that little pest along?” asked a frowning, irritated Claire, throwing her arms about wildly. “She’s been trying to seduce Wyatt since the first moment she met him! This morning in Bermuda she even propositioned him.”

Claire crossed her arms and stared at Michael. “Why should I even give that little saboteur the time of day? WHY?”

Michael touched his hand gently on Claire’s shoulder. “Because,” replied Michael, “she was Madeline’s little sister, Louisa, and she was in the camp with her.”

Claire gasped. “Gretchen is Louisa?” She sat on a park bench and looked up at Michael. “Does she know?”

Michael sat next to Claire. “No. But she will soon and when she does she’s going to need you, Julie, and Heidi to guide her.
